Q: How do I convince my family/friends/significant other that a swift is a wise investment?
A: Take your ball winder. If you don't have a ball winder, find your nostepinne or whatever else you use for such tasks. Find laceweight. (About 1200 yards is a good start - not that I would know). Explain to your victim, er, helper, that they must hold the yarn while you wind. Begin winding. At approximately 450 yards, begin describing how helpful a swift is. When complete with winding laceweight, pull out other yarn to wind "since you have the help". Watch how fast they offer to find you a swift.
